The action was carried out in partnership with the initiative We plant good deeds in Romania, on the same day the planet celebrated Earth Hour.
OSCAR Downstream, the largest independent fuel distribution company in Romania, has joined the initiative We plant good deeds in Romania, financially supporting the afforestation of 3 hectares of forest in Cenei, Timis County.
On March 23rd, OSCAR Downstream employees joined the We plant good deeds in Romania team to kick off what will mean 15,000 saplings of willow, mojdrean and tatar maple. The event started in the early hours of the morning with a training session on the correct planting technique and useful information on how the forest ecosystem works. Then followed about 3 hours of work in teams of 2-3 volunteers, assisted by forestry engineers from the host organization.
"On Earth Hour, we want to raise awareness about environmental issues that affect us all. We started this action on a land that suddenly came to life and will become, in a few years, forest.", said Nicolae Banica, CEO OSCAR Downstream. "In beautiful weather with a lot of sun and good cheer, 28,500 forest saplings (willow, mojdrean, Tatar maple) were planted in the plain in order to regenerate the unproductive and degraded land in Cenei commune, Timiș county. With the help of the 300 volunteers present, 7,500 forest saplings were planted, and with the help of day laborers, the rest was completed. This afforestation action in Cenei continues OSCAR Downstream's tradition of volunteering and civic engagement in the communities where the company operates. Recent initiatives also include the renovation of Sextil Puşcariu High School in Bran, Brasov County, and the renovation, endowment and decoration of the secondary school and kindergarten in Draşov, Alba County.
